Moving
Wow. The past two weeks of my life have felt like an eternity, but I also completely lost track of the days and find it crazy that it is mid-September. I moved in to my first apartment. I am officially a Brooklyn resident. I always loved Brooklyn. The community, the arts, the space, the culture. It felt so comfortable fully moving here. What was NOT comfortable was the actual moving. Man, I did not know how much it sucked. On top of moving, my roommates and I had 4 friends visiting, I worked 40 hours during the week, and then my parents visited as the cherry on top. This exact moment that I am writing these words feels like the first time I have had a chance to breathe in 14 days. While there are still some boxes in the kitchen and living room, the apartment itself is starting to come together and beginning to feel like a home. Sometimes I come home and smell one of my roommates' dinners just being finished cooked, hear some laughter in the living room, hear some music from one of their rooms, or I come home to all the lights off which alerts me they are still out. It's a simple little life so far. Luckily, my roommates and I have been friends for a while now, so it has been fun to create a space that is ours. As things begin to come together (and hopefully settle down), I have found myself reflecting back on what has made my previous houses homes. Nostalgia for my childhood home, college apartment, and even friends' houses that I have spent way too much time in has been my main emotion. For each of these places I so vividly remember the energy, smells, and lighting of. It's never been about the contents in the room, the tables, couches, or TVs. It's been about the love that is inside the walls. The conversations that get remembered. The laughs after a long day that remind you why you do all of this in the first place. Moving is scary, annoying, laborious, and stressful. But if you just take a step back, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that surely your roommates' box of shoes won't stay in the middle of the kitchen forever, then you'll be just fine. I am very excited for this new chapter. My little room is quite cozy. If anyone has some cool decoration ideas... HMU.
